Socialisation is controlled exposure to the world — surfaces, sounds, people, handling, being alone. A free-for-all with strange dogs can do the opposite of what you wanted, and a lot of reactivity we see later started at a puppy party.
Puppies use their mouths. The job is teaching bite inhibition and giving the mouth somewhere to go — not stopping a puppy being a puppy.
Used badly, a crate teaches a puppy that being alone is frightening. Used well, it is the single most useful thing in the house — and it is most of the answer to potty training too.
